Ombudsman Commission of Papua New Guinea

Mandate

The Constitution of the country established the Commission and the organic laws set out the jurisdiction and functions of the Commission. The Jurisdiction focus in on maladministration, anti-corruption, human rights, anti-discrimination, integrity of political parties and judicial appointments.

Functions

The functions include investigation at own initiative, power to make special reference to the Supreme Court on questions of Constitutional interpretation, power to enforce rights such as right to life and right to freedom from inhuman treatment, prepare reports and recommendations, pursue investigations through courts where human rights violations have occurred, provide alternative dispute resolution such as mediation and persuasion and refer cases to other more appropriate bodies.
